PFAS-free pots and pans - safe and healthy cooking
PFAS-free pots and pans at Cook & Pan are pans whose non-stick coating or base material never contains PFAS, PFOA or PTFE. We use three safe material families: cast iron, 3-ply stainless steel, and aluminium with a ceramic non-stick coating. So you can be sure no synthetic polymers end up in your food when heated, even if you accidentally let the pan get too hot.
What is PFAS and why choose a PFAS-free pan?
PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a group of synthetic chemicals used since the 1940s in water-repellent coatings, clothing, packaging and non-stick pans. The substance is known under names like Teflon (PTFE), GenX and PFOA. PFAS barely breaks down in the environment and accumulates in humans and animals. The European Union is working on a broad phase-out. By choosing PFAS-free now, you prevent small amounts of these substances from ending up in your food or in the air in your kitchen during daily cooking.
How do you make a pan non-stick without PFAS?
There are three ways to get non-stick performance without a synthetic coating, and we use them all:
- Cast iron - a pure natural material that builds its own patinated non-stick layer with use and oil. No coating needed, lasts a lifetime.
- 3-ply stainless steel - no coating, no risk of wearing off. With the right heat and a bit of oil, your dish only briefly contacts the surface before it releases.
- Aluminium with ceramic non-stick coating - the coating is made of silicon oxide, a mineral also found in sand and glass. Not plastic, not a polymer.
None of these materials contain PFAS. Which one suits you depends on what you cook most and how much maintenance you enjoy.
Which PFAS-free pan suits you?
The PFAS-free range covers every type of pan. Per dish and cooking style there is a matching variant:
- For all-in-one starter kits - the cookware set without PFAS as a complete starter.
- For everyday frying - the frying pan without PFAS for eggs, omelette, fish and vegetables.
- For stews and big portions - the casserole pan without PFAS for stew, hachee and oven-braised dishes.
- For sauces, pasta and risotto in one pan - the saute pan without PFAS with high walls for liquid and sauce.
- For stir-fries and Asian dishes - the wok pan without PFAS that reaches wok heat fast.
- For sauces, milk and small portions - the saucepan without PFAS with a long handle.
- For pasta, soup and large amounts of water - the cooking pot without PFAS that brings water to a boil fast.
Which hobs do PFAS-free pans work on?
Our PFAS-free pans work on every heat source: induction, gas, ceramic and electric. Cast iron and stainless steel are naturally ferromagnetic and therefore induction-ready. The aluminium pans with ceramic coating have a ferromagnetic base plate baked in, so they pick up heat on induction too. Move to a kitchen with a different type of hob and your pans come along.
Care without coating worries
A big advantage of PFAS-free is that you do not have to worry about the coating wearing down and substances coming loose. For cast iron, good care means brief drying and lightly rubbing with oil. Stainless steel is robust and dishwasher safe. For the ceramic coating: let the pan cool down before rinsing, use wooden or silicone spatulas and avoid steel wool. None of our pans have a coating that releases harmful fumes when overheated.
The Cook & Pan PFAS promise
We never use PFAS, PFOA or PTFE in our coatings or materials. No synthetic polymers, no slow release during heating, no residues in your food. Cast iron pans come with a 25-year warranty on manufacturing and material defects, other products with 7 years, and the function of the ceramic coating with 2 years. Want to try a pan first? You have 60 days of try-cooking to test it at home and still send it back if it does not suit you.
