The Tamagoyaki, often called Tamago, is a Japanese rolled omelet. You can recognize it not only as breakfast but also as a topping on your sushi. There, this rolled omelet is wrapped with seaweed. Very unique and also really tasty!
The Tamago turns out to be a tricky dish to master. ‘And it’s just a fried egg,’ we thought ourselves. You can prepare it in many ways and add your own flair. Cook and Pan explains the basics; if you already have some kitchen experience, this is definitely doable!
Where do we start? With the ingredients:
- 4 eggs
- 2 tablespoons chopped carrot
- 2 tablespoons chopped green onion
- 2 tablespoons chopped bacon, ham or other meat of choice
Step 1: Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.
Step 2: Heat the pan on medium heat and add oil.
Step 3: Add the half of the bowl’s filling, spreading it gently by sliding with the Tamago/Tamagoyaki pan.
Step 4: Once the egg starts to set, you can carefully roll it up and let it rest on one side of the pan.

Step 5: Add the other half of the filling to the pan while the rolled egg is still cooking on the side. Lift the rolled egg slightly so the added filling can go underneath it.

Step 6: Once the second portion is cooked, gently roll the already rolled egg over it.

Step 7: Take the Tamagoyaki out of the pan and let it cool for 5 to 10 minutes. Then slice it and serve!
Did you manage to follow along and wonder how it will taste? Our tip; Just start! You probably already have most of the ingredients at home and you definitely shouldn’t miss out on the experience.
We’re curious what you think! Feel free to let us know! Enjoy cooking.
