Why is PFAS suddenly all over the news?

PFAS is a group of thousands of substances that don't break down. That's why they're called 'forever chemicals'. They build up in your body, and the Dutch RIVM has now found them everywhere: in drinking water, in food and even in breast milk.

For a small child, that matters more. During pregnancy, some of it is passed on. And as soon as the first spoonfuls of food arrive, it's direct: from the pan onto their little plate. Until then, everything still went through you.

The biggest sources are drinking water and food. But PFAS is also found in raincoats, cosmetics, packaging and the coating of many pans. A coating that starts to come loose after a few years of scratches.

And this is where it gets confusing. Lots of pans say "PFOA-free" on the packaging. Sounds good, right? But PFOA is just one substance from the PFAS group. The rest? Still in there.

There's no need to panic. But you can remove the sources that are in your own hands. Cooking without PFAS is one of them.

2. Don't use metal spatulas

How do I know if a pan is PFAS-free?

At Cook & Pan, we keep cooking pure and healthy, without harmful substances that could end up in your food. Our coatings are completely free from PFAS, PTFE, PFOA and Teflon. Our products are independently tested and certified to the strictest European food safety standards. So you can cook safely, without worrying about your health.

Does a PFAS-free pan lower the PFAS in my body?

Honest answer: you mainly take in PFAS through drinking water and food, so a single pan won't solve that on its own. What a PFAS-free pan does do is remove one daily source from your own kitchen. You're no longer cooking in a coating that may contain PFAS. It's one of the few PFAS sources you can easily cut out yourself.

Can I still enjoy non-stick convenience without PFAS?

Yes, absolutely. Our PFAS-free pans have a smart ceramic or hybrid coating that gives you the same non-stick convenience, so food doesn't stick and cooking is effortless.

Are the pans safe for everyday use?

Yes, they're designed for everyday cooking. Our pans are durable, can handle normal heat and are completely PFAS-free, so you can cook safely time after time.

What's the best way to care for my PFAS-free pans?

Although they're dishwasher-safe, washing by hand is often best for long-lasting performance. Avoid scouring pads and harsh cleaning products to protect the coating.

Can I use metal spatulas on the non-stick coating?

Our reinforced coatings, such as honeycomb structures, protect the pan against scratches, so you can carefully use metal spatulas. For the longest lifespan, though, we recommend silicone or wooden spatulas.

Should I stop breastfeeding?

No. The Dutch public health institute RIVM and the Netherlands Nutrition Centre (Voedingscentrum) advise you to simply keep breastfeeding, even after this study. The benefits of breastfeeding far outweigh this. What you can do is remove the sources that are within your control.

Are these pans safe for baby food?

Yes. The ceramic coating is free from PFAS, PTFE, PFOA and Teflon and has been independently tested to European food safety standards. So nothing from the pan ends up in the food, whether you're cooking for yourself or making a little purée.

Which pan is handy for small portions?

The 16 cm saucepan. It comes in the 7-, 9- and 12-piece sets and is just right for a small portion of vegetables or a little purée. It's usually also the oldest pan in most kitchens, so that's exactly the one worth replacing.

What do I do with my old pans?

Take them to the recycling centre rather than putting them in general waste, so the metal gets reused. If the coating is still completely intact and free of scratches, you can still use it perfectly well for something other than cooking.

I'm giving it as a gift. Can the colour still be exchanged?
